Shenzhen, China: an amazing story of development

Shenzhen’s impressive array of skyscrapers and shops

The city of Shenzhen is yet another stellar example of what an impressive destination China is. This is certainly a county that keeps revealing new wonders every time I visit. Every city has a unique scene to explore, has an immense variety of marvels and an unmistakable character. Shenzhen is no different in this respect and in fact it is a city that should be high on every person’s wish list for visiting China. Sure, there is the indispensable Beijing and the memorable Shanghai, perhaps even the sleek Hong Kong, but to get a taste of what modern China is all about Shenzhen is the place to see.

Shenzhen is currently one of the world’s largest and fastest growing cities at the same time. It is a huge economic center for trade, it has a massive port, maximizes in industrial production and service industries. This city on the pearl river delta is just across the border from Hong Kong and reaching it is no more than a metro or bus ride away. With all these factors in play one might think of an overcrowded, polluted and just plain packed city. But far from it, the city is a great example of urban planning and a sustainably pleasant living environment. It is impressive to think that this was a humble fishing village a little more than thirty years ago. But with a dedicated purpose for special economic interest and production it quickly became what is it now: a world-class megacity with innumerable attractions.

Part of what makes the city enjoyable is the ease with which one can get around. Public transit in the form of the extensive and affordable buses and the metro keep traffic flowing well. There are wide sidewalks everywhere, which encourage pedestrians and electric motorbikes. Even with all the production there is no smog, and the city has made wide use of space for parks, golf courses and it successfully allows one to feel lots of open air and greenery amidst scores of lofty skyscrapers and busy boulevards.

The first approach one should take to Shenzhen is how best to explore the city. There are many ways to pass the time, but some to be recommended are things like exploring the lavish luxury hotel scene which is certainly more affordable here than in many other big cities. Here one can experience unparalleled comforts in places like the J.W. Marriott, Grand Hyatt, St. Regis, Ritz Carlton, Shangri-La and Kempinski each one of these is an experience of classic luxury overlooking a city that runs in every direction as far as the eye can see. These hotels are all well located throughout this city that is geared towards business and leisure.

The expansive KK Mall boasts many shops with cosmopolitan appeal and variety

Another major attraction in Shenzhen is shopping, whether it be in the enormous malls or pedestrian shopping zones there is enough here to faze even the most dedicated spender. The city is a hub of design and manufacture, including clothing and electronics so there is always a steady supply of production and purchase. Don’t be fooled into thinking things are super cheap, in fact they’re expensive. The main attraction is certainly the downtown MixC Mall. It is located in the Luohu district at Da Ju Yuan Metro station. This mall like many in Shenzhen boasts a large display of designer clothing from around the world and local tailors. The mall has a built in ice-skating rink, a gourmet foods store called Ole and some of the ritziest shopping in town. Other great malls are the nearby KK mall, and Yitian Holiday Plaza one of the newest mega shopping malls in Shenzhen, the is home to the newly opened, first Apple Store of the city. This mall is conveniently located across the road from Window of the World, an impressive theme park with recreations of cultural monuments and buildings from around the world. A whole different venue to shop and engage in local culture can be found near the modern center in a well-known pedestrian shopping street called Dong Men.

Shenzhen’s well ordered city structure for all makes for a pleasant and modern megacity

Shenzhen is an attractive city due to its cosmopolitan feel, its modern design and its position at the center of so much trade, information and technology. It is a place that is really worth visiting and one which would be undoubtedly fun to live in too. China has many great marvels to share and be sure this is one you decide not to miss.
