The original Mandarin Hotel in Bangkok is one of the Mandarin Oriental’s two flagship properties

Excellent hotels build a reputation on particular qualities, standards, services or even some sensational properties in the chain. These distinguishing traits are often exceptional and more importantly they must endure for a hotel to be considered truly excellent. While such things may change, develop and vary; the unique history and current brilliance of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group demonstrates that remarkable hotel qualities won’t be estranged from them anytime soon.

This is a brand that for us embodies the quintessential form of Asian hospitality and has authentically and organically reproduced it in all of their properties around the world.  Having stayed in many of their properties in Asia, Europe and North America we can attest to a stellar commitment to guests needs, a passion for quiet luxuries and impeccable attention to detail.

A look at the history of The Mandarin Oriental is enough to understand why they assume such rare hotel qualities so naturally. The famed luxury Mandarin property was the first flagship hotel operational in Hong Kong. In 1974 The Mandarin International Hotels Limited undertook operations as a hotel management company. Their acquisition of a substantial interest in the well renowned Oriental Hotel in Bangkok put them in the unique position of having two flagship properties. In 1985 the company restructured into the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, reflecting the dual distinction of running two of Asia’s most esteemed hotels.

From the perspective of a guest this hotel visibly strives to make one feel at home. For someone who doesn’t value intimate settings, refined décor and finely polished details, this hotel might not be appealing. This preference for the luxury of solitude is obvious even from the layout of the hotels. Generally the lobby is small and quiet. Hallways a thickly carpeted and rooms constructed with thick woods and ornate stone to reduce noise. Pools, spas, steamrooms, saunas and the like are gently tucked away from high traffic areas of the hotels. These spaces are essential to relaxation and their range of treatments and layout stir the senses. Every room is a sanctuary in which to bask in the simplistic and rich tones of furnishings, fabrics and fragrances. All in all, the guest is made to feel that his or her personal time in the hotel is of the utmost importance.

Mandarin Oriental staff we have found to be incredibly friendly, they are enthusiastic about their work, anticipatory of a guests needs and they will work even outside their usual responsibilities to solve an issue. They are an essential element in creating the magical and otherworldly paradise that is each individual hotel. Mandarin Oriental properties occupy some of the busiest city centers in the world and some of the most remote tropical and rustic paradises. It doesn’t matter which realm you find yourself in, because you will always find that quiet and intimate space where nothing matters except your encounter with your own preferred mode of being.
