As an icon of modern cosmopolitan splendor, Kuala Lumpur is home to a competitive and fantastically luxurious hotel scene. The city is Malaysia’s crowning achievement and the hotels are some of the finest indicators of progress in the ever growing skyscraper parade. Amidst all this bustle and glam it may be hard to pick out one place from so many grand options, but here we offer two great hotels for your consideration.
The Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur
Set just a short ten minute walk from the ever impressive Petronas towers and easily accessible KLCC central district sits the budget business Doubletree by Hilton. This property occupies a larger mall/tower complex called The Intermark which gives it a stunning look and unrivaled access to excellent shopping, restaurants and business ventures without even having to leave the complex. The check in was fast and gracious and we were given a nice upgrade to an executive room floor. The room has a very elegant appeal with lots of glass, white colors and cream colored drapery. One problem we encountered with the room was that it had a connecting door to another room. This allowed for much sound to travel from one side to another and it seems out of place on an executive floor (which is designed for adults while adjacent rooms are designed more for families) The lounge has amazing views of the cityscape, the Petronas towers, KL tower and even the mountains surrounding the city. The food choices were healthy, varied and well delivered. The lounge staff in particular were exceedingly friendly and kept up with our every request.
The hotel is equipped with a moderately sized gym, which has excellent views of the pool and cityscape. It has a variety of machines in good order and an active attendant. There is a steam and sauna in each of the locker rooms as well. The hotel has a spa facility, conference and banquet facilities and a beautifully situated salt water pool complete with massage jets. In view of all this is the open air Tosca restaurant serving up Italian specialties nightly. In all, the hotel itself has five restaurants and bars. The décor of each is artfully savvy and the mood is relaxed and the lights dimmed. This is an excellent facility from which to work and to rest from work, shopping or touring the center of the city.
The J.W. Marriott Kuala Lumpur
This is certainly a luxury property in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s city center. J.W. Marriott is synonymous with quiet luxury and unfailing standards around the world and this hotel yields that and more in the heart of this competitive market. The lobby is ornate with marbles and colored stones and pillars. The hotel itself occupies a larger opulent mall complex and is joined to the adjacent Ritz Carlton just adding to the prestige. If all this is not enough, it is literally steps from Pavilion Mall, Kuala Lumpur’s most centrally located mall with over 500 retailers. The location is prime and yet there are many reasons to stay indoors too.
The hotel has an excellent quality of rooms. The style is refined luxury in very basic tones of color. We were upgraded to a junior suite, which boasts a cozy bedroom, a comfortable sitting room, lavish bathroom with a soaking tub and amazing city views. Having stayed here on several occasions we can say the executive floor rooms are stylish and thrilling as well. The executive floors and the suites give access to the lounge, which is by far one of the biggest highlights of this hotel. The setting is that of a refined and sophisticated perch, like a living room in the sky. With graceful columns to adorn and expansive windows to look out over the city one gets the feeling of floating aloft. Even the furniture seems to set the most comforting mood and the bountiful breakfast, refined afternoon tea and evening drink and cuisine options are hands down the best of any lounge we’ve experienced yet. The quality and variety are marvelous.
The hotel has a well-maintained gym with good equipment and fantastic views too. Just down the hall one can find an intimate yet flourishing spa, steam and sauna facility complete with relaxation rooms, Jacuzzi’s and a first class locker room. The ability to shop from right within the hotel complex to just across the street remains a large attraction for many visitors too. Whether one is here to explore, shop or just rest it is not very far inside or out of the hotel to find some of the best things Kuala Lumpur has to offer.
